Pollenites: How Does Music Move You?
Explore how music transforms our culture and society at A Night of Social Wonder.
Oct 21, 2015

As a member of the Pollen community, you know the importance of engaging dialogue that not only deepens our roots here locally, but also expands our horizons as global citizens. We are lucky to have a gateway to the Scandinavian region right here in our own backyard: the American Swedish Institute. ASI is a busy hive (or rather, a busy castle) that connects Minnesota to Sweden and her Nordic neighbors.

One of the many commonalities between the North Star State and Sweden is a love of music. Sweden has more choir members per capita than any other country in the world and it’s turned out just a few of the biggest names in pop music in the last century. Minnesota has more great professional and community choirs and musical ensembles than we can count, and we all know our local music scene is second to none!

ASI will celebrate this connection and explore how music transforms our culture and society at A Night of Social Wonder: The Way Music Moves Me on Wednesday, October 21.

In an adapted petchakucha format, four thought leaders will share their insight on music’s impact on a variety of human experiences.

Richard Akstrom, Scholar and Musician and Grammy Winner, shares his award-winning research on the synchronization of choral singers’ heart rates. (His findings were featured on CNN and the BBC, and in TIME Magazine.)

A “creative safarist,” Adam Davis-McGee  (AAM ) will touch on the relationship between sound, color, harmony and technology.

Maria Genné, Director of Kairos Alive!, is convinced that artists are key to community health and wellbeing—and (finally) scientific research is figuring it out, too.

Minnesota Orchestra musicians R. Douglas Wright and Roma Duncan will share insights from the Orchestra’s historic trip to Cuba and speak to the impact of musical diplomacy.

The evening will be emceed by one of Minnesota’s biggest music buffs, Mark Wheat of 89.3 The Current.
