THE POSITION

The Production Wig Hair and Makeup Artist is responsible for building, styling, and maintaining wigs and hair pieces, and for providing makeup and hair services as designed for each Guthrie production. Interpret designs, research, and verbal ideas in the execution of assigned projects. This position is full-time, non-exempt and benefits-eligible. Compensation is $32.19 per hour plus benefits. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 13. The typical schedule for this role will vary based on the dynamic schedule of a theater. The current schedule is Sunday – Thursday, 8:30am-5:00pm.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Wigs, Hair and Makeup execution

• Create wigs and hairpieces.
• Cut and style finished wigs.
• Fit wigs in collaboration with management, design team, and actor.
• Provide haircuts as assigned to maintain actors’ hair in accordance with the Costume Designer’s vision.
• Demonstrate use of hair product to enable actors to maintain their look for the run of the production.
• Demonstrate use of makeup in accordance with the Costume Designer’s vision.
• Coordinate with other production departments to develop plans for the efficient integration of wigs and hair pieces.
• Maintain style of wigs and hairpieces as determined by the Costume Designer or Head of Wigs Hair and
• Make-up to maintain continuity of the production throughout the run.
• Collaborate with the design team and management to understand designer’s wishes and available resources for the assigned workload.

2. Special Projects and Duties

• Monitor and lead other artisan’s work when directed by the Head of Wigs Hair and Makeup.
• Advise and assist other shop staff when requested.
• Build and/or lead special projects which may be highly complex or detailed.
• Take an active leadership role in maintaining expected levels of craftsmanship and artistic excellence.

3. Operations

• Maintain and organize wig stock as directed by Head of Wigs Hair and Makeup.
• Assist co-workers with maintaining wig shop and run room spaces, tools, and equipment.
• Shop for supplies as determined by the Head of Wigs Hair and Make-up.
• Support the tech process by completing tech notes as directed by the Design Team or Management.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Significant demonstrated experience with wig construction and maintenance, or a combination of equivalent experience and training.
• Knowledge of cosmetology industry standards and best practices.
• Can lift 20 lbs.
• Demonstrated leadership experience.
• Knowledge of precision hair cutting.
• Knowledge of hair and wig dressing.
• Knowledge of products used with hair and wigs.
• Knowledge of makeup and the application of makeup.
• Creative problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated organization skills.
• Ability to build wigs and hair pieces using natural and synthetic hair.
• Capability to move from project to project quickly and manage time efficiently.
• Capability to handle significant responsibility with little or no supervision.
• Capability to manage multiple priorities to ensure work is completed in a timely and productive manner.
• Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in oral communication on an interpersonal or group level.
• Ability to form teams with artists and co-workers with a variety of personal and working styles.
• Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy with designers, actors, and other collaborators in fittings.
• Flexibility to work well under pressure and respond calmly and efficiently to changes during the rehearsal and tech process.
• Strong commitment to safety and ergonomics in the workplace.
• Availability to work evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
• Experience with and commitment to working with individuals and teams that are mixed across lines of difference such as race, gender-identity, sexual orientation, religion, ability, age, class and immigrant status.
