The mission of The Advocates for Human Rights is to implement international human rights standards to promote civil society and reinforce the rule of law. By involving volunteers in research, education, and advocacy, we build broad constituencies in the United States and select global communities.

Program Summary

The Women’s Human Rights Program applies international human rights standards to advocate for women’s rights in the United States and around the world.  Using research, education and advocacy, the program partners with local organizations overseas and in the United States to document domestic violence, rape, employment discrimination, sexual harassment in the workplace and trafficking in women and girls for commercial sexual exploitation.

The International Justice Program develops innovative, sustainable strategies to hold governments accountable for human rights abuses and to strengthen institutions in the international justice system.  The International Justice Program partners with diaspora and international human rights defenders to build their capacity to use local, regional, international, and transitional justice mechanisms to end gender-based violence against women, the use of the death penalty, and violence and discrimination based on race, religion, ethnicity, and sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.  The Advocates holds consultative status with the United Nations and the International Justice Program coordinates The Advocates’ monitoring and reporting to United Nations human rights bodies and regional human rights mechanisms.

Position Summary

The Program Associate will split their time between the International Justice Program and the Women’s Human Rights Program, supporting staff in the projects of both programs. The Program Associate will provide administrative and substantive support to specific projects in the programs, including the WATCH court observation project, StopVAW.org, our local and international work to end violence against women, death penalty abolition, building capacity of human rights defenders, and UN advocacy. *Note: This position may involve occasional work outside of normal hours based on time zones of international partners and UN events.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Logistical Support

• Support planning, logistics, and training for local, international, or virtual-based missions including UN Advocacy, fact-finding, and training workshops
• Coordinate and assist with virtual, international, and U.S.-based trainings on human rights issues
• Help coordinate logistics and travel planning for missions and other monitoring projects Geneva Study Advocacy Trips
• Lead coordination of logistics for other human rights fact-finding projects
• Assist International Partners with travel, obtaining visas, etc.
• Provide support to the WATCH court observation project, including creating WATCH calendars for volunteers

Volunteer and Intern Coordination and Training

• Supervise and coordinate remote volunteers and interns who updates Advocates’ online deadline database of deadlines for reporting to UN and regional human rights bodies
• Coordinate interviewing, hiring, management, and training of in-office and remote interns Coordinate and train pro bono volunteers who research and draft reports
• Support staff attorney in developing UN submission training program
• Meet with Refugee and Immigrant Program clients identified as being interested in human rights advocacy during case closing meetings, as well as with human rights defenders upon request, to discuss possibilities for engaging in human rights advocacy
• Liaise with international partners to build and maintain longstanding relationships

Research and Writing

• Assist with researching, drafting, and editing reports to UN bodies, publications and other written advocacy materials
• Support publication and dissemination of human rights reports, submissions to the UN, workshop and training curricula, factsheets, and other materials
• Assisting with the maintenance and updating of StopVAW.org

General

• Support other staff with all-hands-on deck tasks such as responses to requests for assistance, event planning, etc.
• Attend and participate in UN events alongside international partners (may involve early morning hours).
• Attend and participate in local educational and fundraising events for the programs.

Qualifications

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree and international human rights experience. Excellent research and writing skills are required. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and detail-oriented skills are recommended.
